Department of History

Being established in the year 1961, K.D.College of Commerce, Midnapore had been existing as the second  exclusive Commerce College in West Bengal after Goenka College of Commerce in the then Calcutta. But almost all the colleges in west Bengal, during the early part of the first decade of this century faced an acute problem of attracting students for the Commerce stream and our college was also not an exception. This situation really worried the authorities of our college and compelled to think otherwise to ensure its existence  and decided to introduce arts stream offering B.A.Honours course in Bengali in the year 2007 by offering ‘History’and ‘Political Science’ as the elective General Subjects for the students pursuing  Three-year Undergraduate course with Honours in Bengali. With the introduction of Arts stream in the course curricula of the college, the name of the college was also rechristened as , ‘K.D.College of Commerce & General Studies’ after obtaining necessary permission from the competent authorities. To cope with the class load, the authorities of the College engaged one Guest Teacher in History and thus the Department of History came into existence in this College.
With the introduction of U.G.Honours course in English and B.A.(General) Course in the very next year, the number of students opting for History as an elective General subject increased significantly. With the increase in the student strength, the College authorities urged the competent authorities for creating permanent and substantive posts of Assistant Professors and ultimately one such post was sanctioned. At present the department is having one Assistant Professor and two SACTs.
