The Department of Geography, K.D. College of Commerce & General Studies, established in 2007, has emerged as a vibrant hub of geographical exploration and academic advancement. Initially offering B.A/B.Sc. General Courses, the department has achieved significant growth and evolution over the years. In 2017, it moved a step forward its academic repertoire to introduce a specialised Under-Graduate course (B.Sc. Hons.), catering to the educational needs of aspiring learners with an intake capacity of 30 to begin with and the same has been increased to 38 as at present. At the helm of the Department there are four distinguished faculty members, each having specialisation in various branches of Geography, complemented by a diligent Lab Attendant. Together, they foster an environment of academic excellence and inquiry, where students are encouraged to explore the multifaceted realms of geographical knowledge.
From its inception, the department has placed a strong emphasis on both the traditional foundations and the practical applications of geographical understanding. Beyond the confines of the classroom, the Department organises educational excursions and field visits, enriching the curriculum and satisfying the thirst for knowledge among students. Through classroom seminars, students are provided with a platform to hone their presentation skills and boost their confidence, preparing them to articulate their ideas effectively in any setting. This approach not only enhances their academic prowess but also equips them with invaluable life skills. It's worth mentioning that the Geography Department not only focuses on academic seminars (State level and National level) to foster geographical knowledge but also incorporates interactions with living legends of Geography. This direct engagement with prominent figures in the field provides students with invaluable insights, mentorship, and inspiration.
Furthermore, the Department has taken proactive steps towards environmental stewardship through the establishment of an Eco-Club named "Oasis". This club, with its various initiatives such as plantation drives, flower exhibitions, saplings distribution through the NGOs, underscores the department's commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, the Eco-Club's "Bihangam" wing provides a haven for birds, facilitating their feeding and bathing needs, thus contributing to biodiversity conservation efforts. Additionally, the Department's involvement in sports and cultural activities is noteworthy. Participation in extracurricular activities not only promotes physical well-being but also fosters a sense of community and teamwork among students and faculty. Moreover, engaging in various cultural events provides an opportunity to the students to celebrate diversity, express creativity, and develop a holistic perspective on various societal and cultural issues. In essence, the Department of Geography stands as a beacon of academic excellence, innovation, and environmental consciousness, interactions with renowned scholars, participation in sports and cultural activities, and strong management practices for nurturing the minds of future geographers and fostering a deep appreciation for the world around us.
