‘College of commerce’ as the name it was at the inception, took birth in the lap of glorious Midnapore college in the year 1961. The college has indeed become a name in imparting exclusively ‘commerce’ education. Ours is the pioneering department with which this college boasts of and it should be mentioned that with Commerce department only this college has been running since its inception in 1961. The elites of the town, veteran educationists and the principal of the Midnapore college, Sri P.N. Ghosh aided by the D.M., Midnapore, Sri B.B.Mondal went ahead to establish a separate college for teaching commerce subjects. The C.U granted its affiliation to the proposed college in July 1961. Thus “College of Commerce” started its journey on 2nd August 1961 under the remarkable stewardship of Prof. Rati Mohan Shinha as its Vice Principal and Prof. Bhujendra Kumar Banerjee as the Principal. The newly established college started imparting commerce education on 10th August, 1961 and which is observed as the foundation day of the College. The college however got recognition from UGC on 17th Feb. 1962 with effect from 1961.
The great heir of Ramgarh Raj Estate (within Lalgarh block, Dist Midnapore) Raja Ranjit Kishore Shingha Sahas Ray, MA, D.Litt., Bhaki Sastri came forward to donate the building owned by him situated at Kshudiram Nagar, Midnapore Town on a plot of land nearly two bighas with one storied pucca building on 7th Nov, 1962 to perpetuate the memory of his mother Kaibalyadayini Devi to the “College of Commerce Midnapore”. Accordingly, the College was renamed as per agreement with the donor as “Kaibalyadayini College of Commerce” popularly known as ‘K.D. College of Commerce’ on 3rd Jan. 1963, and necessary approval of C.U was accorded on 19th April 1963. After required renovation and extension construction of the 1st floor, the College was shifted from Midnapore College Campus to its own present Campus in July 1967. College obtained affiliation in teaching Honours in ‘Accountancy’ in the year 1965 from C.U. There were 396 students in the 1st batch. Student’s strength grew day by day. During its glorious journey since inception, the College earned fame in commerce education. Students exhibited there proficiency in different professional fields like ICA, ICWAI, Law, teacher, Law year, Govt. Officer, and social worker. With the establishment and functioning of Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, in mid eighties, the affiliation of the college was shifted to V.U., Midnapore. The College went on functioning only the imparting Commerce Education (i.e. B.Com. Honours in Accountancy and B.Com(General) exclusively for a long span of 47 years upto 2006.
The dedicated teachers, devoted employees and innumerable sincere students have tirelessly fuelled the brightly burning light of learning in the logo the college in 64 years.
The NAAC Peer Team visiting this College in 2004 urged the authorities of the College to introduce some computer and management oriented courses. The College initially established as an exclusive Commerce College approached the affiliating university with a request of extending necessary permission to introduce BBA course with the existing faculty members. But unfortunately, the effort was not materialized due to insignificant response from the aspirants. The very next year, in 2006 the college took the initiative to introduce B.Com. Honours Course in Marketing Management and after obtaining necessary approval from the affiliating university, the Course was duly introduced as a Honours Department with two teachers having specialization in Marketing Management at the Postgraduate Level, thus taken away from the Commerce Department. And so far the Department is the only of its kind among all the Colleges affiliated to the Vidyasagar University. As the Department of Accounting & Finance and the Department of Marketing Management are interrelated and some subjects are common without having any new recruitment of faculty members, the Department had been running successfully since inception with two full time teachers of Associate Professor rank and one SACT was added to the squad afterwards.
The Marketing Management Department, right from the inception is actively engaged in teaching as per the requirement of the business and corporate world, the affiliating university has modified the course curricula from time to time. The latest revision in the syllabi has been implemented from the Academic year 2023-2024 in compliance of the directives issued under New Education Policy where a bunch of new subjects are being offered.
Role of the Department
The concept of marketing that we visualize now has more to do with developments during the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. That was a period of rapid social change driven by technological and scientific innovation coupled with the orientation of mass marketing. One result was that for the first time , the production of goods was separated from their consumption. Mass production, development of transport infrastructure and growing mass media meant that producers needed to, and could develop more sophisticated ways of managing the distribution of goods.
In the present socio- economic perspective, Marketing plays a significant role, though at the initial stage marketing was considered to be activities concerned with advertising for selling products. Marketing is the interface between producers and consumers and now marketing has become an intrinsic part of each and every business. As long as the concept of economy exists, and simultaneously business activities are in operation within the economy, marketing is supposed to be in demand. Marketing also provides a career in which personal preference is created especially for those who relish the challenge of networking and creating business relationships.
Apart from imparting lessons contained in the course curricula, the Department also stresses upon developing the moral, ethical and civic sense among the students so that each of them may become a responsible citizen of future India. With this objective in view, the Faculty members have started organizing Mentorship meetings with the students to help them in overcoming their individual problems in academic, personal as well as social life. Not only that for obtaining cordial cooperation from the guardians in building the careers of their wards, the faculty members arrange ‘Parent-Teacher Meet’ as and when required.
Marketing Management being an emerging field in the area of modern competitive business environment opens a challenging avenue for the young aspiring professionals. Keeping this objective in view, the Department attempts
-
To Provide all information regarding the scope and opportunities of this subject.
-
To impart the lessons in the perspective of real life scenarios with specific examples to day to day life phenomenal examples for creating interest in the subject.
-
To explore the latent potentialities of the students effectively, so that they may become successful in selling themselves in the job market.
-
To encourage the students in developing their entrepreneurial skill for taking up independent ventures according to their means and choice.
-
To train up the students in building their moral characters to become a responsible future citizen of the country.
-
To encourage the students to take part in extracurricular activities such as Sports, NSS, fine arts, music and other cultural competitions to enhance their self-confidence.
